Body Weight Assisted Gait Training in Guelph
At Westwood Physiotherapy Neuro and Vestibular Rehab, we offer Body Weight Assisted Gait Training (BWAGT) using our advanced Guldmann GH3+ Ceiling Lift with Trainer Module. This technology enables our physiotherapists to safely support part of your body weight while you practice walking, standing, balance, and other functional movements.
Whether you’re recovering from a stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, surgery, or another neurological condition, BWAGT provides a safe environment to begin walking earlier, improve movement quality, and regain confidence.

Getting back to walking takes practice, and lots of it. At Westwood Neuro and Vestibular Rehab in Guelph, our physiotherapists use body weight assisted gait training (BWAGT) to help people with neurological conditions practise walking safely, with far more repetitions than a standard session allows.
What Is Body Weight Assisted Gait Training?
Body Weight Assisted Gait Training uses a comfortable harness connected to our ceiling-mounted support system to partially unload your body weight while you practice walking.
This allows people who are not yet able to safely support their full weight—or who have difficulty with balance—to practice real walking with reduced risk of falling.
Depending on your stage of recovery, therapy may include:
- Overground walking
- Treadmill walking
- Balance training
- Sit-to-stand practice
- Stepping activities
- Functional mobility training
Unlike traditional gait training, BWAGT allows you to focus on normal walking mechanics while your physiotherapist provides hands-on guidance and adjusts the amount of support as you improve.
Who Can Benefit From BWAGT?
Body Weight Assisted Gait Training may be appropriate for individuals recovering from:
- Stroke
- Motor-incomplete spinal cord injury
- Traumatic brain injury
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Cerebral palsy
- Vestibular and balance disorders
- Orthopaedic surgery affecting walking
- General weakness following prolonged hospitalization
- Other neurological conditions affecting mobility
Every person is different. Your physiotherapist will complete a comprehensive assessment to determine whether BWAGT is suitable for your goals and stage of recovery.

Why Does Body Weight Assisted Gait Training Work?
Research continues to support Body Weight Assisted Gait Training as an effective rehabilitation tool when combined with skilled physiotherapy.
High-Intensity Practice
Recovery improves when walking practice challenges your cardiovascular system appropriately. Rather than simply walking for longer periods, our therapists carefully adjust the intensity of your training to match your abilities while promoting recovery.
Repetition Builds Recovery
The nervous system learns through repetition.
With body weight support, many patients can safely complete hundreds—and in some cases more than 1,000 purposeful steps during a single treatment session. This provides far more opportunities to practice normal walking than traditional therapy alone.
Timing Matters
Body Weight Assisted Gait Training can be beneficial at different stages of recovery, particularly during the subacute and chronic phases after neurological injury. Your physiotherapist will determine when it is appropriate to begin and how quickly to progress your program.
Purposeful Movement
Walking practice should be meaningful—not simply repetitive. Every session is designed around functional goals that help improve mobility in everyday life.
Skilled Therapy Makes the Difference
The equipment itself is only one part of successful rehabilitation.
Recent research suggests that how therapy is delivered—including progression, intensity, and clinical decision-making—has a greater impact than the specific device being used.

What Makes Our Approach Different?
Our Guldmann GH3+ Ceiling Lift with Trainer Module creates a safe environment for walking practice, but your recovery is guided by the expertise of your physiotherapist.
During every session, your therapist continuously adjusts your program by:
- Gradually reducing body-weight support as your strength and balance improve
- Encouraging active participation rather than passive movement
- Progressing walking speed toward real-world community walking
- Providing hands-on guidance to improve posture, weight shifting, and walking mechanics
- Correcting compensatory movement patterns before they become habits
- Monitoring movement quality, fatigue, balance, and cardiovascular response throughout treatment
- Progressing you from supported walking to independent overground walking when appropriate
- Combining BWAGT with other evidence-informed treatments, such as Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), strengthening exercises, balance training, and high-intensity interval gait training when clinically indicated
Every treatment plan is individualized to your needs and recovery goals.

- Facilitate early mobilization
- Support longer walking sessions with less fatigue
- Challenge balance while maintaining patient safety
Because the support is dynamic and adjustable, your physiotherapist can gradually reduce assistance as your walking improves.
