Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Physiotherapy is a health care profession focused on improving movement, reducing pain, and restoring function through evidence-based approaches like manual therapy, exercise prescription, education, and activity modification.

At Westwood Physiotherapy, we help people recover from injury, manage chronic pain, prevent future problems, and optimize mobility so they can return to daily activities or sport with confidence.

No — in Ontario you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin physiotherapy. Our therapists are trained to assess your condition and determine an appropriate plan of care. However, some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so we recommend you check with your provider.

Most services at private physiotherapy clinics like Westwood are not covered by OHIP. However, many extended health benefits and WSIB or MVA claims can be billed directly. We can help you with direct billing where available.

Our team treats a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions including back/neck pain, post-surgical rehab, sports injuries, balance issues, headaches, arthritis pain, stroke rehab support, pelvic floor concerns, and more. Treatments are personalized to your goals and function.

Booking & Appointment Questions

Your first appointment includes a thorough assessment of your movement, strength, pain patterns, and functional goals. Based on this, your therapist will explain what’s contributing to your symptoms and design a customized treatment plan. Expect hands-on care plus advice for self-management.

Initial assessments may be longer to allow for a complete evaluation and planning, while follow-up sessions focus on treatment and progression of your plan. Specific time lengths vary based on your unique needs.

Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows easy movement of the area being treated (e.g., shorts for lower-body issues, a sleeveless top for shoulder work). Bring supportive footwear if you’ll be doing gait, balance, or functional movement training.

Treatment & Care Questions

Therapy should not cause undue pain. You may feel short-lived discomfort during certain techniques or exercises, which is often part of identifying movement limitations. Your therapist will always tailor techniques to your comfort level and explain what to expect.

Westwood offers a range of services including manual therapy, exercise-based rehabilitation, neurological rehab, shockwave therapy, pelvic health physiotherapy, gait and balance training, custom orthotics and braces, and therapeutic education.

Everyone responds differently. Some people notice improvements after one session, while others require multiple visits to build strength, mobility, and confidence. Your therapist will give you realistic expectations based on your condition and goals.

Insurance & Billing

Yes — we offer direct billing to many extended health providers, and we are registered with WSIB for workplace injury cases. For motor vehicle accident (MVA) claims, we can guide you through the necessary documentation and billing process.

Our team can help you check your benefits. We recommend confirming specifics like coverage limits and eligibility before your first visit.
